Welcome to Smokey Bear's Hometown Association web page.  Our mission is to "encourage the awareness and appreciation of Smokey Bear's fire prevention messages and to raise money to support and improve the Smokey Bear Historical Park", which is located in Capitan, New Mexico.  Smokey was rescued from the nearby Capitan Mountains in 1950.  After spending his life in the Washington, DC National Zoo, his body was returned to Capitan and is buried in the park.

The association was formed in 2005 by Capitan residents, but our membership includes people from across the country that have an interest in Smokey Bear and what he stands for.

We are a registered 501c(3), non-profit organization with the IRS and is supported by the U.S. Forest Service, New Mexico State Forestry and the Smokey Bear Licensing Manager.

Projects our first year included a community gazebo raising in the memorial garden which were both paid for out of donations and fundraising dollars.

Our next project for the spring of 2008 is getting the Greenhouse finished.  This will be an educational greenhouse for the community and children alike.

Election of officers for the Association will be held during Smokey Bear Days.  If you are interested in holding an office please let us know at 575-354-2748.

The Community playground, behind the old firestation, next to the Smokey Bear Historical Park is FINISHED!.  Please notice the lookout, fire truck and binoculars that are the playground equipment and relate to Smokey and Fire Prevention.  This is a community project involving the Capitan Library, PTA, Lion's Club, Capitan Women's Club, Village of Capitan and Smokey Bear's Hometown Association.  Thanks to all the volunteers, especially the Sierra Blanca Camp for all your hours of hard work.

CHRISTMAS FUND RAISER:  We still have a few bags of  pistachios from Eagle Ranch, here in New Mexico.  They are so fresh!  Order several today.  We are carrying chili, plain and salted for $10.00 per bag.

We are an active participant in the annual Smokey Bear Days held the first weekend in May in Capitan, NM.  One of our yearly fundraisers is the chainsaw carving contest on Saturday.

The Smokey Bear Stampede is July 4th weekend of every year.  The Association sponsers the Fun Run.  See Links for info.
